The retail segment is directly influenced by new trends in technology, consumer behavior and the market. Marcos Luppe, coordinator of the MBA in Retail and Consumer Market at USP/Esalq, listed the five main trends in retail that cannot go unnoticed by professionals working in the segment. New consumer – More demanding and informed, the new generation of consumers poses challenges for retail. “Companies need to know this new consumer. What are they looking for? That is why by lists registration is essential,” stated Luppe. Digital world – Nowadays, most consumers are connected, which is why the relationship with the consumer must be rethought. “The customer comes into the store and says that they looked up a TV price on the internet and asks what the store can do,” he said. E-commerce – The durable goods segment, which includes TV sets and cell phones, is one of the most competitive in virtual stores. “There is a lot of discussion in Europe and the US about the role of the physical store. E-commerce is growing and companies need to adapt,” he reported. Customization – Luppe mentioned brands such as Nike and Brazilian brands Havaianas and Chilli Beans, which already offer customized products to customers. “Being different has never been so popular, hence the success of product customization,” he said. Technology – Advances in technology have led to the emergence of equipment and services for the retail segment. According to Luppe, retailers need to be allies of new technologies. “The Starbucks chain launched an app in the US to avoid lines in stores. Customers place their orders and pay through the app and go to the store to pick up the product. There are programs that measure the flow of people entering the store and identify the hot areas of the business (where they attract the most attention from customers). It is necessary to keep up with advances in technology,” he said.
